Location: Madinah, Saudi Arabia
Timescale: 2018 - 2019
Cultural Innovations was appointed as museological and experience design consultants to the Quran Oasis concept masterplanning project in Madinah. Much more than a museum of the Holy Quran, the project aims to link the historical past of the Quran with a forward-looking and intellectually stimulating centre that examines and celebrates the role of Quran in science, arts, geography, education and daily life.
Working with lead architects SSH who were responsible for sitewide masterplanning, Cultural Innovations led all aspects of visitor studies, content research and development, storyline development, experience planning, and related functional and operational planning. With large numbers of visitors expected for the site, often arriving by tour bus, visitor flow studies and space planning were of critical importance to the masterplan.
The project involved high-level stakeholder consultation including consultations with and presentations to a panel of leading Islamic scholars. Three high-level thematic zones were developed (History & Story, Education & Ethics and Creativity & Innovation) within which centres, workshops and displays delivered exciting and spiritual experiences for religious.
